"A studio course in three-dimensional design stressing a problem-solving approach. The course introduces principles governing the use of form and focuses on the development of skills necessary for creating three-dimensional projects with a variety of materials. Students may not take this course and AFA 106 for credit. "
Project #1- Line
Brazing Steel and Brass
3-Dimensional Design
1/31/2012
This project consisted of learning to braze steel with brass to create a sculpture with seven main forms each connected by short 2-3" pieces of steel and then painted using a specific color scheme with acrylic paint. Cardboard shapes were then glues to the piece to add definition to the planes.
For this project, we used oil based clay to create an organic form each with at least one hole through the entire piece. We used this form to create a plaster mold of the piece. We then removed the clay from the mold and replaced it with about one pound of plaster mixed with two cups of water. After 72 hours, we began to chisel away at the mold to reveal the piece inside. After being removed from the mold, we sanded it down to remove any air bubbles or notches and to create a smooth surface.
For me, this project represents the balance between man and woman. On each side of the piece there is a hard edge to represent masculinity and a smooth rounded side to represent femininity. The circular form of the piece represents eternity and balance.
